A stoma is a surgically created opening in the abdomen that allows waste or urine to exit the body when the normal path is compromised. There are three main types of stomas – colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy. A colostomy connects the colon to the abdominal wall, diverting waste into a stoma bag. In an ileostomy, the small intestine is connected to the abdominal wall. It is often performed when the large intestine needs to be bypassed. Urostomy is only performed when the bladder lacks functionality, allowing urine to be diverted through a stoma. Stomas provide a renewed sense of independence and normalcy for many individuals with digestive disorders, as they can resume their daily activities without constant worry or discomfort.#16#
